Destination Spotlight: Vancouver & Whistler, Canada

What they really offer incentive and corporate groups

We recently spent just under a week on the ground in Vancouver and Whistler on a famil trip with Accor Hotels, with one clear aim: to understand how this destination genuinely performs for incentive travel. What we found surprised us. A city that feels like home, with the energy and polish of a great North American city, paired with a mountain village that delivers luxury and adventure like nowhere else in the incentive world.

Why this destination works

Vancouver and Whistler deliver something very few destinations can: genuine five-star comfort, then raw, spectacular wilderness right outside the door. Direct flights from Sydney remove the usual long-haul friction, the hospitality is exceptional, and the whole experience feels effortless. One of the biggest surprises was how well both cities suit conferences, sales kickoffs and study tours, not just incentives. For groups wanting a destination that feels both accessible and genuinely extraordinary, this one makes a compelling case.

Standout hotels and venues

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

  • Best suited to: Incentive groups and conferences that value classic five-star grandeur
  • Standout: A landmark heritage building in the heart of the city, with high-end retail at ground level and a real sense of occasion on arrival
  • Event spaces: Dedicated event spaces and a spectacular enclosed rooftop bar for dinners, cocktails and welcome receptions
  • Plan around: A CBD location rather than waterfront. Harbour-focused programs may be better placed at Fairmont Pacific Rim or Fairmont Waterfront

Our take: Known locally as Castle Vancouver, this is traditional luxury done brilliantly. The service sets the tone for the whole destination, and it suits groups like financial services, insurance and pharmaceutical companies who want a classic Canadian experience in the centre of the city.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler

  • Best suited to: High-end incentive programs, plus sales kickoffs and smaller conferences
  • Standout: Sheer, unapologetic mountain luxury at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, regal in feel yet entirely immersed in wilderness
  • Event spaces: Ground-floor event spaces, beautiful grounds, and Whistler Village a short walk away
  • Plan around: Transfer time from Vancouver. Design the journey as an experience in its own right, not a logistics gap

Our take: Like nothing else in the incentive world. It suits programs where the environment matters as much as the agenda, and arriving here after the Sea-to-Sky Highway feels genuinely earned.

Experiences that elevate the program

This destination shines through its breadth. Live NHL hockey thrills any crowd. Float plane flights over the harbour are dramatic and uniquely Canadian. Zodiac boat tours sweep under the Lions Gate Bridge, past seal colonies and the West Vancouver foreshore. Stanley Park offers cycling, trails and spectacular city views. The variety means you can build a multi-day program with genuine energy and no filler.

In Whistler, the Bearfoot Bistro is the standout group activation: an underground cellar of more than 20,000 bottles, champagne sabering, and the Grey Goose Ice Room, the coldest vodka tasting room in the world. It’s the kind of exclusive experience clients talk about for years.

Cultural depth sets Canada apart too. First Nations cultures thrive throughout the region and are celebrated rather than footnoted. The totem poles in Stanley Park are a moving tribute, and Whistler’s First Nations cultural museum offers a thoughtful, engaging window into the history of the region. Guests remember this long after they return home.

Practical planning insights

What we’d change next time: Honestly, nothing. One of our team loved the itinerary so much they’re going back for their honeymoon

Ideal group size: Vancouver scales from intimate groups of 15 to conferences of several hundred at the new waterfront convention centre. In Whistler, around 50 guests is the sweet spot

Best time of year: Spring and autumn for Vancouver. Whistler is genuinely year-round, with summer adventure, winter snow sports and an atmospheric October shoulder season

Key planning focus: Transfers and dining. The airport sits outside the city, the Whistler journey takes around two hours, and the village’s excellent but intimate restaurants need careful pre-booking for larger groups

Our honest take

Vancouver and Whistler over-deliver on the blend of luxury and adventure, and the people seal it. The DMCs, hotel teams and local operators in both cities were outstanding: warm, professional and genuinely invested in the experience. That kind of trust in local partners is rare, and it makes planning and delivery significantly easier.

For clients looking to incentivise a sales team, channel or workforce with something that feels both familiar and extraordinary, this destination is a standout. Come ready to be active, come ready to be surprised, and come ready to never want to leave.
